During the G8 summit, which took place in Gleneagles from the 6-8 July many people from the world’s poorest countries also held meetings in Edinburgh to discuss the issue of poverty.
The G8 leaders who represent the world’s richest and most powerful countries were not the only people meeting in Scotland to discuss poverty in Africa.
The Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), an alliance of thousands of organisations from across the globe, held meetings throughout the course of the summit where ActionAid representatives and partners from all over Africa participated in debate and discussions on the future of African development. ActionAid feels that it is vitally important to make sure that the voices and needs of African people are central in any plans for the future of Africa. By inviting African spokespeople to Edinburgh we hoped that their African agenda for change in Africa would be heard. Listen to Amanda Serumaga, ActionAid country director Uganda, explain the need for poor people to be at the heart of their own development process.
