“Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.” Nelson Mandela, 2005
Poverty is not inevitable. We live in a world of unprecedented prosperity and technological innovation, so why is it that:
This shameful situation must end.
Bringing about long term, lasting change means tackling the root causes of poverty and not just the symptoms of it. Too often, policies made by rich country decision makers are part of the problem, keeping poor countries locked in poverty and unable to set their own development priorities.
This needs to change. ActionAid campaigns in both developed and developing countries to get politicians and decision makers to start helping, rather than hindering developing countries.
Sometimes change takes a long time to come. But it can bring massive benefits to people's daily lives. Public campaigning has resulted in the cancellation of billions of pounds worth of poor country debt. This means that largely thanks to the efforts of people like you, 2 million children in Tanzania now get free primary education. Read about some of our campaign successes here.
To campaign effectively, we need active public support. Showing that people really do care about the injustice of international poverty influences politicians. By campaigning with ActionAid, you can be part of our international efforts to condemn poverty to the history books for good.
If you would like to support ActionAid’s campaigns to fight poverty by writing a letter, coming to a campaign event or lobbying your MP, please sign up for our monthly act!on newsletter.
