Almost without exception the world’s worst human rights abuses and humanitarian crises take place during conflict. In ActionAid’s work, poverty and conflict are inextricably linked and we work in many countries that are in one way or another affected by violent conflict.

We consider that people affected by emergencies are citizens with rights and responsibilities. People have a right to protection, to human security and to assistance based on their needs. ActionAid is committed to maximising the voice of those who are affected, and especially those whose voice may be the least heard.

Poor people themselves should be involved in analysing the impact of conflict. Conflict should be viewed primarily from their perspective. We seek to strengthen the capacity of communities to withstand the effects of violent conflict and if possible conduct a peace and reconciliation process that allows people to move on from the conflict and strengthens poor people and their social institutions.

We work with communities, helping them to cope with the impact of conflict on their lives by securing their access to food, shelter and a means of making a living. Our programmes also support the recovery of the communities in post-conflict situations where hope for the future plays a crucial role in securing lasting peace.
