Global Week of Action for AIDS

The UN meeting on AIDS, known as UNGASS takes place in New York from the 31st May-2nd June. At UNGASS in New York heads of state and decision-makers will come together and review how the world is doing in the fight against AIDS.

The Global Week of Action for AIDS was organised to raise the concerns of HIV&AIDS activists not able to attend this high profile event. It was a week of events and rallies taking place across the world involving hundreds of people all demanding stronger political commitments in the fight against HIV&AIDS.

What happened in the UK?
ActionAid helped to organise a major Stop AIDS Campaign event in Parliament, which was aimed at MPs, ministers and key policy-makers: 'AIDS Treatment for All? The Global Challenge in 2006'

  • it focused on the latest developments on the G8’s promise of AIDS treatment for all by 2010, and looked ahead to the vital UN, G8 and Global Fund meetings this summer
  • speakers talked about the realities on the ground in the worst affected countries, the successes to date and what more needs to be done
  • there was a massive map of the world made entirely out of campaigners’ eyes, to show how our highly visual public campaign focuses thousands of eyes from across the world on the UK Government and the promises it has made
  • on 27-28 May ActionAid Space will launch a major new HIV & AIDS campaign at the Hi-Fi North Festival. They’ll be running the campaign at various festivals throughout the summer.
