Trade has the potential to lift millions of people out of poverty, but poor countries are getting a raw deal under the current global trading system.
Trade rules can have a devastating effect on the world’s poorest communities by forcing small local farmers and producers to compete with giant multinational companies. ActionAid’s Trade Justice Campaign is working in 20 countries across the globe to persuade governments and international organisations that current trade rules are unfair.
In the UK we put pressure on the government and EU – calling on them to ensure that poor countries have the right to choose the best policies, empower women and protect the environment. So far, we have helped to raise trade justice onto the political agenda, and help prevent the World Trade Organisation forcing a bad trade deal on developing countries.
Take action
Campaigning with ActionAid means that you are directly helping to tackle the unfair rules that govern world trade and keep people poor.
We also campaign as part of the Trade Justice Movement, a coalition of over 80 UK organisations calling for trade justice - with the rules weighted to benefit poor people and the environment. The Trade Justice Movement represents over nine million people in the UK who continue to campaign for trade justice.
Sign up to target poverty
Governments, big business and world leaders can end poverty. You can influence them. Join target poverty and we will help you to take action that leads to change.
