Our podcast for International Women’s Day comes from India.
Imogen Wall’s report begins at a school in rural Uttar Pradesh founded by Rubeena Gulnaar.
Rubeena was pulled out of school at 12 years old and married off at 17 to a man ten years older. Her husband abused her physically and sexually before ending the marriage by saying "I divorce you" three times - a Muslim practice still legal in India. She went back to school, got a degree and became a teacher herself.
In the city of Benares we meet Arjeet Singh who, with his wife Manju, runs a campaign promoting the rights of women in the sex trade. In their fight against child prostitution the campaigners have faced physical battles with the police and brothel-keepers.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata’s huge red light district the Sonagachi sex workers project now has over 60,000 members and runs a huge range of services for them. The women have a superbly efficient system for finding and rescuing young girls trafficked to the city as sex slaves.
