24 May 2007
On 24 May the UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) launched an appeal to raise money for relief urgently needed for the people of the Darfur region of Sudan. This follows the first appeal that raised much needed funds in 2004.
With more than two million people now displaced by the conflict, the crisis in Sudan and neighbouring countries is worsening.
To make any real impact in Darfur requires a significant on-the-ground presence. ActionAid is backing fellow DEC member agencies in their vital efforts to reduce suffering in the region. But as we do not work in Sudan, Chad or the Central African Republic, we will not be taking part in this appeal.
We are confident that the funds raised by the DEC will go direct to member agencies already working in the region that have the means to make a real difference to those who are suffering. We encourage our supporters to donate. Donate to the DEC here.
ActionAid works in emergency situations where we believe we can make a long-term difference. Often this means only working where we already have established development programmes, networks and partnerships.
