25 June 2009

On 20th June 2009 17 of us set off from Llanberis at 4.30am with the aim of spending the longest day of the year trekking the challenging terrain of Snowdonia national park and the Glyders.
Armed with a good weather forecast promising sunshine and a warm summers' day, our group awoke ready for a lovely day's walk summiting 6 of Snowdonia's summits including Snowdonia and Pen y Pass.
Unfortunately the reality was very different! We began our 19 hour walk at 4.45am accompanied by a light drizzle which continued all day, punctuated by bursts of gail force winds and driving rain! Rather than the scenic views we were hoping for we spent most of the day walking through clouds that settled nicely in all directions.
Despite the challenging weather conditions leaving us wet through and very cold, this just added to the group spirit and camaraderie that kept us going over rocky terrain, steep descents and inclines, and boggy marshes! The wisest among us who came prepared for all weather conditions happily shared out layers, hats, gloves and walking poles for those unprepared for the additional challenges brought about by the extreme weather conditions.
We were rewarded by the occasional burst of sunshine revealing stunning lakes, rolling countryside and even the Welsh coastline.
At 11.30pm we returned to the youth hostel very wet, very tired, but utterly triumphant that we had succeeded in our challenge to trek the duration of the longest day of the year. We feel absolutely justified in demanding our friends and family help us raise much needed funds for ActionAid to make our hard work worthwhile, and so far we're on track to raise almost £10,000 for ActionAid's Priority Fund.

Participant quotes
"I really enjoyed my Midsummer Challenge experience. It wasn’t too hard to raise the sponsorship required and the registration fee was a suitable amount. The training needed was pleasant and not to arduous. The whole weekend and trek itself were well organised with a great team looking after everyone." Rob Henson, 25, Northampton
