FTA Briefing manual

Find out how a new breed of European trade agreements are threatening to undermine the fight against global poverty.

Produced in conjunction with two other leading UK charities, this manual is a series of eight briefings on the European Union’s approach to FTAs.

It aims to explain EU policies, procedures and practices to trade officials, NGO professionals, and others interested in supporting developing country positions.

The manual will enable partners (both within the EU but also in third parties) to:

• Identify the EU’s strategic approach in pursuing FTAs
• Understand and predict EU offensive interests and tactics in FTA negotiations
• Predict likely EU proposals, demands and even language in FTA talks
• Compare current EU asks in FTAs with past practice
• Provide indications and key (economic and political) evidence of the likely development implications of EU proposals
• Indicate areas of concern (and how to counter them)
