100 young people descend on Parliament Square yesterday and stunned passers- by with an amazing synchronised dance. Whilst Greenpeace protesters on the roof of Westminster demanded ‘Change the politics, save the climate’, the dancers (which included our very own Anella) were making a creative statement on the same theme, climate change.
This was the final day of Power Shift, a four-day gathering of young people who are all determined to be part of the solution to climate change. I went to join them in central London on Saturday, and met some really great people who are refusing to sit back and let climate change carry on unchecked.
They were keen to take part in our Food v Dust campaign and came up with their own messages to the UK government which will be delivered along with the 4,500 we have already collected at festivals this year. Not done yours yet? Get on with it!
There were some inspirational speakers and workshops going on but what was most impressive was the energy and passion of the young people there. There was a real sense of urgency, a kind of lets-just-get-the-funk-on-with-it atmosphere, and I’m sure everyone will be going home with ideas and plans to get a climate revolution started in their communities.
And the dance? It doesn’t end here. We’ll be teaching all you Bollocks to Poverty fans the moves and inviting you down to set the streets alight at the Wave demo in December. (Not literally - please don’t burn things, it makes the policemen cross.) You will be part of a massive crowd of people who KNOW dancing round London is much more fun than walking. More details coming soon…
