Fact: Over 50 per cent of children in Haiti don’t go to school – many grow up illiterate and turn to begging for an income.
Aim: To provide education in one of Haiti’s most deprived areas, Lascahobas, where only 37 per cent of children attend school.
Haiti update: The earthquake of January 12 devastated Haiti’s education system and many schools remain closed.
Before the earthquake, construction had begun on a school which will provide 300 children in Lascahobas with a quality education (and safe water to drink). But hen the earthquake hit, ActionAid staff had to turn their attention to immediate, emergency relief.
Today, work is continuining on the school. The walls have been plastered, the floors are finished and two additional classrooms and an office have been built. The buildings have been constructed with concrete and the roofs are made from galvanized corrugated iron sheets, which are weather proof and well ventilated so that the children will have a better learning environment.
Thanks to you, in September 2011, the poor children of Lascahobas will be able to go to school for the first time
