Haiti: quality education for poor, rural children

Fact: Over 50 per cent of children in Haiti don’t go to school – many grow up illiterate and turn to begging for an income.

Aim: To provide education in one of Haiti’s most deprived areas, Lascahobas, where only 37 per cent of children attend school.

Haiti update: The earthquake of January 12 devastated Haiti’s education system and many schools remain closed.

Before the earthquake, construction had begun on a school which will provide 300 children in Lascahobas with a quality education (and safe water to drink).

The school is scheduled to open in September, but this may be delayed. Please revisit this page for updates on the project’s progress and thank you for your ongoing vital support.

How far will your donation go in 2010?

  • £20 could pay for school books for one child for a whole year
  • £40 could provide desks and chairs, meaning children no longer have to sit on the classroom floor
  • £1,500 could build toilet facilities to improve water and sanitation facilities for pupils at the school
  • £2,919 could construct a well for the school, providing safe water for 300.
