Worldwide: support for children in conflict and disasters

Fact: Every year, more than 300 million people – including 60 million children – are affected by conflict or natural disaster.

Aim: To provide immediate aid to children and young people caught up in emergency situations, and provide long-term recovery and support. The project also supports our award-winning disaster risk reduction programme, helping children be better prepared for disaster.

Thanks to you: Our rapid response work included providing food, health and hygiene kits to thousands of people affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Because of you over 10,000 people affected by floods and conflict in Pakistan received the immediate help they needed, and food supplies were  delivered to over 10,000 people in Bangladesh after Cyclone Aila.

Because of you, Lamia Akter knew how to save the lives of family and friends when Cyclone Sidr struck.

From drought in Myanmar to landslides in Uganda, your donations have helped ActionAid to provide urgent assistance in a dozen countries, when vulnerable people needed it most.

We cannot predict when or where future disasters will strike, but by arming our staff with the necessary skills and knowledge, we can ensure that we are ready to respond.

Children in emergencies

  • Children are especially vulnerable in disasters
  • They may lose their homes, parents and education
  • They can also be exposed to disease, malnutrition and violence
  • In 2007 the UN launched its greatest ever number of ‘flash appeals’ in one year
  • 14 were in response to climate change-related disasters alone.
