Gaza crisis appeal

23 January 2009

The conflict in Gaza has had a devastating effect on the lives of civilians. ActionAid partner organisations are on the ground and ready to start distributing aid. We urgently need your help to provide essentials to vulnerable survivors.

ActionAid in Gaza: your questions answered

Shattered lives

  • There are still 18,000 people who cannot go home, either because they are too afraid or because their homes have been destroyed. They are in desperate need of food and shelter.
  • Children are traumatised, displaying symptoms like being unable to sleep or bedwetting.
  • It is estimated that 1.9 billion dollars worth of infrastructure has been damaged.
  • Cooking gas was last allowed into the Gaza Strip on 8 January, while diesel last entered on 7 January.
  • Unexploded ordnance has killed two children since the ceasefire.

ActionAid's emergency response

  • With partner Austcare, we will be distributing tarpaulin sheeting, mattresses and candles.
  • We will provide care for vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, to help them recover from traumatic experiences.

Building for the future

  • Cash-for-work reconstruction programmes will help people return to a more dignified and normal life, with adults earning a living again and children going to school.
  • Our partner Asala will be working to help women whose businesses have been damaged. They estimate more than $200,000 will be needed.
