Gabby, Claire and Jan are Funny Women

09 March 2009

ITV’s London Studios on the city’s Southbank was filled with many glamorous women (and the odd man) last night as they celebrated International Women’s day in style at Celebrity Funny Women.

In support of ActionAid, the charity gala featured the pairing of some of the UK’s favourite female celebrities with well-known comedians for an evening of stand-up, impressions and a little bit of magic!

Hosted by the glamorous Claire Sweeney, the show opened with impressionist Jan Ravens teaching her tricks of the trade to Blue Peter legend Janet Ellis, who pulled off a very convincing Lorraine Kelly, Nigella Lawson and Kirsty Walk amongst others.

Under tuition of previous Funny Women winner Andi Osho, Gabby Logan put her presenting skills to good use and wowed the audience with her first ever stand-up comedy act, whilst  PR guru Lynne Franks took to the stage with aid of Canadian comic TanyaLee Davis (and a few tips from her comedian son Josh Howie).

The final act saw the pairing of comedy magician Fay Presto (in place of Mandy Muden) and LBC’s Jeni Barnett, who mixed card tricks with comedy.

With musical performances by comedy double-act Adams and Rea and house-band Vaginal Tap, the evening proved to be a huge success and raised awareness of ActionAid and its current Put Your Foot Down campaign.

‘‘Put Your Foot Down’ is calling on the government to act on the issue of violence against women in the developing world, and its link to the spread of HIV and AIDS.
