Press information

ActionAid celebrates PoverTee Day on Friday 18 June. It’s a national day to help fight the major causes of poverty worldwide.

This is a shout-out to everyone fed up with poverty and injustice to get it off their chest! Whether at work, school or home, people across the UK are being urged to ditch their usual attire and take part in PoverTee Day by simply wearing a t-shirt and donating £2 (or 50p if you’re at school).

Change the world: change into a t-shirt!

Every t-shirt worn on Friday 18 June will help to change the world. It can be any t-shirt – an Action Aid t-shirt, a personalised slogan t-shirt or a favourite old tee – any shirt will do!

What does £2 actually mean?

To give a snap shot – if 10 people wear their t-shirts on PoverTee Day and give a £2 donation, ActionAid will be able to provide school books for one child for a whole year in Haiti. Each donation makes a huge difference to children and families living in poverty in Africa, Asia and the Americas.

The money raised will provide a nutritious breakfast for school children in Malawi, irrigation programmes for struggling farmers in Ethiopia or emergency food aid during droughts in Kenya.

Celebrity supporters will be backing the campaign. We will be launching a nationwide design competition to be judged by a celebrity fashion industry panel.

Richard Miller, Director of ActionAid UK said: “ActionAid is asking everyone in the UK to take part on Friday 18 June and help provide a window of hope for millions in many neglected parts of the globe. The message behind PoverTee Day is simple; wear a T-shirt for £2 and help give the world’s poorest and most excluded communities a voice.”

As the number of people living in a state of devastating poverty worsens, ActionAid is calling everyone to take part in PoverTee Day and pledge their support by wearing a t-shirt to help fight to end poverty.
