Violence broke out between government and Taliban forces in the northwest of the country in May, forcing more than 2.3 million people to flee.
Makeshift camps sprang up to cope with the huge numbers of vulnerable people, and ActionAid swiftly moved into action providing food and hygiene kits to almost 5,000 families, setting up mobile health camps and distributing medicines to help stop the spread of disease.
A Doctor's story
"We have found them to be simple, humble and determined people..."
Until the danger passed we had to suspend our everyday programme work. This kept our staff members safe and allowed us to concentrate on our emergency response.
We asked supporters who sponsor children in the area if they would be happy to have their contributions diverted for a short while towards our response work, and the vast majority were happy to do so.
This meant we could hire 32 teachers to help 1,500 children back into school, provide kits containing notebooks, pens and pencils to replace those that were lost, and organise sports activities for young people.
We are also helping to replenish crops and livestock and set up income generation schemes, to encourage people out of the camps and back home.
We would like to say a very big thank you to all who supported this work.
