HIV positive children in Kenya

Kenya, like so many other African countries, has a high level of HIV/AIDS and, as a consequence, many orphaned children. These children and HIV/AIDS positive women need food and a potential income source.

One of the ways we provide this is by giving them goats. They are easy to manage and provide highly nutritious milk. Goat’s milk is in demand on the international market and, because goats give birth up to three times a year, they provide additional income through the sale of kids.

We have been running a very successful pilot in Kenya’s Nyeri North District for the last two years and had planned to increase this to surrounding communities.  In fact we had the next group lined up – 200 adults (80% women) and 450 children orphaned by AIDS in the same area.  But the financial crisis means that overall we have lost the equivalent of £250,000 from our Kenya budget and can no longer afford this life-saving project. We only need an extra £23,000 to get these people up and running and on the road to self-sufficiency.
