What ActionAid are calling for

06 July 2009

The hunger crisis is no longer in the headlines, but it is still a huge part of people's lives. Communities worldwide are struggling to grow or buy enough food. One billion people now go to bed hungry every night.

Hunger isn't natural, it is man made. That means that humanity has the power to end it. The seven men and one woman meeting in L'Aquila can go a long way towards ending hunger, if they want to.

To tackle hunger, the G8 must:

  • Commit to spending more money on food and farming
  • Support a new global partnership on hunger
  • Act fast to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help poor countries adapt to the already changing climate
  • Drop targets and subsidies for agrofuels
  • Ensure that land deals in developing countries do not reduce their food security
  • Stop forcing free trade on poor countries

Most importantly, we are asking the G8 to keep their promises. In 2005, the G8 promised to increase aid to $50 billion by 2010. They are still $15 billion short. Last year, they promised to spend $10 billion on the hunger crisis. They only spent about half of that. Ultimately, we are calling for action rather than just fine words: the poor can't eat promises.
