John O'Groats to Cape Town - our cyclists go the distance for ActionAid

11 August 2009

On 8th July 2009 intrepid cyclists Sebastian Davies and Grant Ross set off on an ambitious journey from John O’Groats (Scotland) to reach Cape Town, South Africa.

They expect their challenge to take around 15 months, during which time they will survive on whatever kit they are able to carry, and the generosity of the people they meet along the way to help them find sustenance and shelter when needed.

Sebastian and Grant are undertaking this 24,000 mile expedition for ActionAid. They are hoping their hard work will help them raise £20,000 which will be donated to an ActionAid water project in Uganda and an education project in Malawi.

The boys will be visiting these projects as they pass through Africa and hope to lend a hand to help in any way they can.

"The trip stemmed from a joint idea to do something extraordinary with our lives. We were inspired to undertake this mission through the loss of our dear friend Neill (Shplotty) Tattersall who died tragically at the beginning of 2008.

"For the entire trip we will be cycling with "Riding with Neill" armbands in memory of his life.

"We feel that NOW's the time to seize the opportunities life throws at us after experiencing such a loss. Partly a rite of passage, partly for travel, partly the urge to make a difference, and partly just because we can!" Sebastian Davies and Grant Ross.
