Hajara Mukyala

ActionAid and award-winning songwriter Amanda Ghost have put the 6 Degrees theory into practice and charted the connection between Amanda to Hajara Mukyala, a 20 year-old single mother from Kampala.

Hajara lives in one of the poorest slums in Uganda’s capital. She was raped at 14 and sent away by her parents because she became pregnant. With no other means to support herself and her daughter, Hajara has had to earn a living as a sex worker.

Hajara helps to educate other young sex workers about using condoms and getting treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

She was part of a team that wrote to the government about STI checks. She helped persuade them to organize a quarterly schedule of medical check ups for sex workers, including providing transport to and from the clinic.

She is receiving training to become a tailor and one day hopes to set up her own business so that she no longer has to earn money as a sex worker.

We recently visited Hajara and shared all the cards from supporters of the 6 Degrees Project with her. She was very happy and smiled for a picture showing the cards off for us.

This brought the whole 6 Degrees project full circle. For International Women's Day (8 March 2010) we are releasing a unique haiku poetry book. Pre-order your copy here.
