What is 10:10?
10:10 is a national drive to cut the UK’s carbon emissions by 10% during 2010. Anyone can sign up to 10:10, from ordinary, people, schools and hospitals to Premiership football clubs!
By joining 10:10, you’re making a commitment to try your best to cut your own emissions by 10%. Sign up to 10:10 now!
What exactly do we have to do?
Aim for a 10% reduction across four key areas of your school's carbon footprint:
• Grid electricity
• Gas
• Road transport (not commuting to school)
• Air travel.
This can be achieved through a saving of 10% in each category, or you can aggregate the emissions from all four categories and aim for a 10% reduction in the total.
What are other schools doing?
St Martin at Shouldham CE VA Primary School, Norfolk
“We’re aiming to cut 10% by running ‘Fuel-free Fridays’. If we use no gas or electricity on Friday afternoons, that’s cutting 10% of our usage across the whole school week.” Marika Mears, Headteacher.
Crispin School, Somerset
“We are busy getting baseline assessments in place to work out exactly how much energy we are using. We have started a ‘Wear your jumper campaign’ and will not be turning the heating on until after half term in November! Then we will be campaigning to get funding to have thermostats on every radiator so our teachers can turn them down. At the moment they are centrally controlled.” Student Climate Change Action Group, Crispin School.
Whitby Community College
“We aim to reduce our carbon emissions through intelligent use of technology and increasing our use of renewable energy. Reducing our daily energy consumption by ensuring all lights and computers are turned off when not in use.” Mark Parkin, teacher.
