Sustainable agriculture

Sustainable smallholder agriculture is a key solution to tackling hunger.

The key factor is that farmers will be able to produce from the land without damaging their prospects for doing so in the future. Sustainable agriculture aims to:

  • look after the environment
  • create profits from farming
  • strengthen communities

Leya's story

Leya Chede from Katiriyo, Uganda, and her family of nine previously went hungry, but an ActionAid-supported seed bank has enabled her to grow surplus maize and groundnuts in a mixed farming system, and she now teaches others to do the same.

“When I planted the groundnuts in the first season I harvested 7 bags of groundnuts and 27 bags of maize grains,” she says. “This was to change my life forever." Read the latest interview with Leya Chede

A history of neglect

Agricultural development as a whole has suffered from long term neglect. International support in the form of aid has actually fallen dramatically, dropping five fold since 1980.

ActionAid is working with poor farmers to help them farm sustainably. Supporting women like Leya is a vital solution to feeding the world’s hungry billion.

But these efforts need scaling up. World leaders must change their approach and invest in a long-term future for sustainable farming.
