Our response in Haiti

09 March 2010

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Now, its creaking infrastructure has been wrecked. The poorest people in Haiti urgently need immediate aid, as well as help for long-term recovery. Donate now!

The earthquake killed 217,000 people and injured 300,000 leaving many with permanent disabilities. Up to 1 million have been displaced.

ActionAid's response

ActionAid has a long-established programme in Haiti. Our staff are there working with communities and helping the poorest and most vulnerable people.

  • We are working on the ground to help up to 27,000 people with a regular programme of food distribution.
  • Shelter is our next priority, as the spring hurricane season begins. ActionAid is providing thousands of tents for the most vulnerable people: pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and the injured.
  • We are helping children get back to school
  • Cash for work programmes are  getting people's  lives back to normal, and we're helping small businesses with grants so they can restock.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, ActionAid has so far raised more than £6 million for relief and rehabilitation work in Haiti over the next three years.
