Getting children back to school in Haiti

16 February 2010

Helping children return to school is one of our key areas of focus in Haiti.

The earthquake devastated school buildings and supplies, and many children have not received any education since.

We will be working to ensure that the most vulnerable children from earthquake-affected families can return to school as soon as possible.

Stage 1: emergency measures

Our focus until the end of April 2010 will be:

  • creation of child-friendly spaces in the camps where we are working, which can also be used as non-formal schools until the schools reopen or are rebuilt
  • supply of scholarships and school stationery kits
  • provision of educational and teaching materials
  • establishment of temporary schools

Stage 2: assessment and inclusion

From May-December 2010 we will concentrate on the following:

  • promotion of inclusive education for children with disabilities
  • assessment of the safety of schools from disasters
  • promotion of disaster-preparedness at school level
  • extension of our ongoing education programme (targeting uneducated teens and young adults) to include technical training and counselling to help them into the national education system.

Phase three: rehabilitation and construction

From January 2011-December 2012, we will make changes that will prepare Haiti for a better future:

  • review of our school curriculum and advocacy work, to include elements of disaster risk reduction
  • further extension of our ongoing education programme.

This work has been made possible by the generosity of our supporters.
