"It is now more dangerous to be a woman than to be a soldier in modern conflict" Major General Patrick Cammaert, former UN Peacekeeping Commander.

While violence against women and girls in conflicts is not a new phenomenon, it is now the case that women are being deliberately targeted for violence, in particular sexual violence, as an integrated tactic of war.

Five years ago, the UN estimated that 100,000 women had already been raped in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Violence against women is one of the worst human rights abuses in the world. Join us in speaking out this International Women's Day.
