Last night saw the launch of See me, Hear me, Read me, ActionAid's bespoke poetry book, featuring haikus by celebrities like Dame Judi Dench, Cherie Blair and Yoko Ono, as well as the women ActionAid works with in developing countries.
The book is part of the women’s rights project, 6 Degrees. Celebrity guests, journalists and opinion formers joined ActionAid staff at Shoreditch to celebrate the launch.
Communications Director Sue Bishop gave an inspirational speech about ActionAid’s women’s rights work and her personal experience with women she has met in our projects across the world.
The launch of See me, Hear me, Read me was supported by long-term friends of ActionAid, Jan Ravens and Helen Worth.
See Me, Hear Me, Read Me takes as its inspiration the complexity of what it is to face the world as a female and the simplicity of a Japanese haiku, a three-line form of poetry where the poet shares their thoughts, feelings and mood. The writers, women from all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities, have found that more unites them than divides them.
The book not only celebrates the power of being a woman, but also highlights the struggles they face all over the world.
