ActionAid in Haiti: latest update

09 March 2010

Almost two months on from the devastating earthquake of 12 January, Haiti is beginning to rebuild itself.

Thanks to your continued support, ActionAid is at work distributing food, non-food items, shelter and healthcare to the people who need it most.

We are currently providing relief in six camps in the Mariani area of Port-au-Prince, as well as support in Philippeau (south-west) and Jacmel (south-east) through our partner organisation CROSE.

Food distribution
Immediately after the earthquake, ActionAid distributed emergency food rations to 2,700 children. Since then, a rolling programme of food distribution has reached 14,400 of the most vulnerable.

Food kits are distributed in cycles, with each family receiving enough food to last a family of six for 15 days. Each food package contains rice, flour, corn, sugar, cooking oil, sardines, corn flakes, spaghetti, baby food, high-energy biscuits, macaroni and black beans.

Hygiene kits and other essentials
ActionAid has distributed more than 1,000 basic hygiene kits, which have reached 6,000 people. These kits contain everyday essentials such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, torch, batteries, combs and plastic bowls. A hundred families in Mariani have also received blankets and kitchen sets to keep them warm and fed.

Shelter
It is vital to get people under cover before the rainy season starts at the end of this month. ActionAid has handed out tarpaulins to more than 800 families in Mariani and will soon be providing shelter for a further 3,000 families.

Health and psychosocial support
ActionAid has linked up with a group of 10 Haitian doctors who have been working in five out of the six camps in Mariani. Through their mobile clinic a total of 1,326 people have so far received basic health services.

We have also been training volunteers from partner organisation COZPAM on how to provide psychosocial care and support (helping people to recover from trauma).

These volunteers are now working in Mariani to reach 2,000 families. We’ve also been training volunteers to help people get back to work and mobilize communities to form committees. Our work in Haiti is part of a three-year earthquake response and rehabilitation programme, which will help 20,000 people rebuild their lives in the wake of this terrible disaster.

Thank you for making this possible.
