"Tax justice is important because it increases transparency in taxes and revenues. Transparency is for both people and governments."
Albert Jimwaga works for ActionAid Tanzania as the governance advisor.
Alongside other likeminded organisations in Tanzania, Albert is campaigning to improve the transparency of mining companies working in the country.
“With a beer company you know how much a bottle should cost, and how much tax should be paid on this bottle. But with mining there is no transparency, no one can say how much has been extracted and how much tax should be paid on the profits the companies make.”
Mining companies generate huge profits from their operations in Tanzania, but ordinary people are unable to check if their paying their taxes.
At the moment tax collection is mostly on salaried workers, on poor communities that pay tax every time they go to the shops, but the rich and large companies can exploit loopholes and evade paying their taxes.
If we have tax justice and everyone is responsible and paying the taxes they should, big companies and individuals, and there is no corruption, this country can then afford to run its own development without loans.
