1. Helen Love - Beat Him Up buy
Kate:"This song is protective, it talks about a girl being beaten up by her boyfriend, and helen love is saying let's find him, we're going to find him and beat HIM up themselves."

2. Bikini kill - Rebel Girl buy
Kate:"Kathleen Hannah, is a well known activist and feminist, she sang a lot about female issues and sexism, Rebel Girl is about people judging girls unfairly, there's a rebel girl in town who won't conform to the rules of society and everybody thinks she's a bitch or 'dyke' but Kathleen Hannah wants to be her best friend, saying she stands for revolution."

3. Destiny's Child - Survivor buy
Kate:"Destiny's Child were always talking about being independent women, and this song is empowering for women. It basically says you can survive, you can get through all the bullshit and end up on top. It's a positive song for young girls because it teaches good morals and life lessons instead of saying they'll get revenge on someone for doing them wrong, they say that they'll do really well in there own lives, even better than before, that a bully will actually make them stronger. So it's teaching you to stay positive not bitter, don't let people get you down, let them fuel your own ambition in life and happiness."

4. Bjork - Wanderlust buy
Kate:"An iconic woman, a beautiful heart wrenching honest song, inspiring us to crave more, to travel and explore. Always 'relentlessly restless', wants to be brave and loves the unknown, rather than letting comforts suffocate her soul."

5. Le Tigre - Hot Topic buy
Kate:"The song lists a bunch of really inspiring women that for whatever prejudice society has against them, we won't stop listening to them."

6. Shrag - New Favourites buy
Kate:"Your best girl friend has a new favourite it's not you anymore, it's so heartbreaking because friends are so important. This has happened to me and it's so weird because you can't break up with a friend so it kind of hurts more because you can never get over it or get closure cause you never know why it ended. "

7. Emmy the Great - MIA  buy
Kate:"Emmy the Great is an intelligent young woman, so so intelligent, smart lyrics, a really sad and dark love song."

8. The Flirtations - Nothing But a Heartache
Kate:"I'm sure that lots of girls and boys too can relate to this song, it's about being treated badly but still being addicted to that person and craving being with them, wanting them to change and wanting them to want you, even though it gives you nothing but heartache and you know it's bad for you. It's something in life that we all have to learn by ourselves and we can't get taught by anyone."

9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Soft Shock  buy
Kate:"Karen O is another amazing iconic female, who in this song, writes beautifully and sensitively about being shocked, about your soft side getting a knock, maybe getting hurt by someone. She comes across as such a strong woman and always writes intelligently whenever talking about love/sex and relationships. It's OK to have a soft side and embrace that part of being human."

10. Bratmobile - Gimme Brains buy
Kate:"'And all the fuckin boys in their fuckin bands'
sometimes as a woman in the music industry you really feel like sometimes it is so unfair that a lot people will never take you seriously because you aren't a boy in a band doing dumb things and bragging about drugs and sexing girls and writing about being a dick and being so cool. You want a boy with brains anyway who isn't a sexist and who knows the meaning of the word equality, you want someone with a brain!!"
