Enid's story

29 April 2010

Enid Mpangare is five years old and lives in Kimengo, Uganda.

She attends classes at a local school set up by ActionAid and one day hopes to become a teacher. With your help, we can make sure more children like Enid get the education they deserve.

Setting up a school

ActionAid set up the ELSE Centre in Kimengo in 2000 (ELSE stands for Empowering Life Long Skills Education).

Before the school was built, many children in the farming community of Kimengo were missing out on an education.

Not only was the nearest school too far away for children like Enid to attend, but they were needed at home to help look after the family’s animals. School materials were also too expensive for many families to afford.

A school for the whole community

ELSE is a non-formal school and provides a flexible education system for 90 children who can’t attend school within the normal hours because of their way of life.

Children don’t have to wear a school uniform (which saves their family money) and they can come and go as they need to. Teachers look for gaps in children’s knowledge and teach them accordingly. ActionAid trains teachers and provides materials for the children and ensures the community plays a key role in the running of the schools.

The school also doubles as a church and a learning centre for adults and has inspired a community.
