Mark Watson unveils Make Your Mark collage in Bristol

01 June 2010

Bristolian comedian Mark Watson today unveiled the West Country’s giant collage at ActionAid’s Make Your Mark festival.

The collage, being displayed in College Green, Bristol until the 7th June, is made up of over 800 self portraits contributed by people throughout the south west. The portraits make up an image of Enid a child from Uganda who, like 72 million other children around the world, struggles to get a decent primary education.

Mark Watson said, “It's mind-boggling to think that 72 million children still can't go to school. For communities to improve themselves starts with education.”

The collage was created as part of ActionAid’s Make Your Mark campaign. ActionAid has been in the south west asking 1,000 people to make their mark on the world by sponsoring 1,000 children. The campaign culminates with ActionAid’s Make Your Mark Festival on College Green, Bristol on the 1st and 2nd June.

The festival is bringing a little flavour of Africa to the heart of Bristol, with drumming and dancing lessons, African regional food and traditional music.

Mark said, "Today is a great opportunity for people to get involved and make a difference, not just to an individual, but to a community.

"It was so impressive seeing the difference a small amount of money can make when I visited Senegal. Sponsorship is a much more personal way of supporting a charity. It's such an important thing to do."

The Make Your Mark Festival runs from 11am to 5pm on the 1st and 2nd June.
