It’s not often this happens. While putting together this issue I was struck by the amount of good news we had to report – progress on our biofuels, Vedanta, tax justice and supermarkets campaigns, plus a great move towards making vulture funds – where rich bankers try to squeeze millions out of poor countries – illegal.

Take a look at the news pages for more on all these. Hopefully, now the election is over, our new government won’t start backtracking on any of this exciting progress. We’re taking education as our theme this issue – the furore around the World Cup has one advantage for a non-believer such as myself: the attention it is drawing to the 1GOAL campaign and the right of every child in this world to an education.

I might not mind who comes out top of the football league, but if this campaign gets anywhere near its goal of education for all, then it seems to me we’re all winners.
