1Goal: the journey so far

30 July 2010

Action magazineOver a million people in the UK and over 14 million people worldwide joined the 1Goal coalition during the World Cup, sending a clear signal to world leaders to back education for all.

Your actions also contributed to a decision by our Minister for International Development, Andrew Mitchell MP, to travel all the way to South Africa on 11th July to meet with world leaders about the need to take action on education for all.

The World Education summit

This meeting was a direct response to the worldwide  support for the 1GOAL campaign.

President Zuma opened the meeting and was followed by Sepp Blatter (FIFA President). 1GOAL Ambassador and South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena addressed the crowd on the importance of Education for All.

Johannesburg schoolgirl and 1GOAL supporter Nthabiseng Tshabala spoke to the crowd about her experience of education and read out a letter to world leaders before delivering a giant yellow card message from the millions of 1GOAL supporters to President Zuma.

What's Next

We have our 14 million-strong movement, and now our sights are set on September. That’s the next time world leaders will meet to discuss education, this time at a UN meeting in New York.
