More rain brings further misery to flood-ravaged Pakistan

09 August 2010

More rain hit flood-ravaged Pakistan on Saturday and even heavier downpours are forecast for coming days.

As the UN revised upwards its estimate of the number of people affected to 4-6 million, renewed Monsoon rain in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa brought further flooding and more evacuations. It is now estimated that 1.5 million homes have been damaged or completely washed away.

With helicopters grounded by the storms it is hard to assess the scale of this new damage - let alone evacuate the most vulnerable people.

What is ActionAid doing?

We are reaching more than 3000 people with oil, flour, fresh vegetables and pulses in the camps in Layyah.

In Chowk Mallah, our field office has provided food supplies, hygiene kits and medical care to around 2500 people, focussing especially on vulnerable women and children.

In Bishigram, we were the first aid agency to get through, providing 180 families with essential kitchen and household goods, as well food and hygiene kits.

We are expecting to deliver aid to more than 23,000 people in the next few months. Just as important, we are already preparing long-term plans to help people rebuild their lives after the flood waters recede.
