Pakistan one month in - what is ActionAid doing?

27 August 2010

On July 29, the deluge struck. Within four weeks, 1539 died, 6 million lost their homes and an area the size of England was underwater. An appeal in the UK has so far raised £42 million.

What is happening now?

The flood waters have receded in places, leaving scenes of unparalleled devastation, with whole villages swept away. Over 200,000 people are suffering from waterborne diseases. And in the south, the rain is still falling.

What is ActionAid doing?

Our programmes on the ground in some of the worst-affected areas allowed us to move extremely rapidly to provide emergency relief to those who needed it most.

  • To date we have reached 47,000 people
  • We aim to reach 120,000 in the coming months
  • We are targeting vulnerable women and children, the elderly and the sick.
  • Our relief camps provide shelter, medical and counselling support.
  • We are distributing food packages, clean water and medical kits

ActionAid are already planning for the long-term, making sure that children like Bilal will get back to school as soon as possible, and that hardworking mothers like Khapay (above) can restore their livelihoods.

What you can do

ActionAid supporters have already been amazingly generous, but the scale of the devastation means there is much, much more to do. Please help by giving whatever you can to give long-term support to the people of Pakistan.
