What is happening?
At least 200,000 people have been affected after over 15,000 houses were completely destroyed in Myanmar following last week’s powerful cyclone. Cyclone Giri hit western Rakhine state on Friday with winds of up to 110mph hitting coastal areas the hardest including Kayaukpyu, Myebon, Pauktaw, Myanaung, and Ponnagyuardest. Thousands remain homeless and official state media have reported 45 confirmed deaths so far in Kyaukpyu and Myebon townships.
ActionAid's reponse
Shiab Uddin, Country Director of ActionAid Myanmar said: “Thanks to our teams on the ground in Rambree Township we have been able to respond quickly and help the most vulnerable people affected by the cyclone. Over the next few days we plan to reach an additional 4000 families with food, water and medicines.”
Working with trained youth fellows and volunteers on the ground ActionAid Myanmar is responding to the emergency and has already delivered emergency food such as cooking oil, rice and noodles for 1,000 families in the storm affected areas.
