Twelve months ago, Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake that killed 250,000 people. Thanks to your generous support, ActionAid has been at work providing food, shelter and support to 138,000 Haitians.

What has ActionAid done in Haiti so far?
ActionAid is reaching over 23,000 families with long-term support.  This includes:

• cholera outreach
• credit schemes that get people's businesses running again
• counselling for the traumatised
• education and safety kits
• distribution of tents and other essential items like soap and blankets
• cash-for-work programmes which pay people to clear rubble and unblock rivers and ponds
  

We have also started the process of getting children back to school.

What are the biggest challenges?
There have been huge challenges in reaching all those affected, due to the scale of the devastation.

The permanent rebuilding of Haiti is also being hampered by a complex set of land disputes. Our report Building for the future: homes and security in Haitidescribes the scale of the problem.

How are we working to make sure the money gets to where it is needed?
Our funds are being directed to helping the most vulnerable Haitian people, including women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities.

We are working with local partners who know the communities well and have put measures in place to ensure transparency in our actions and accountability to the people we are working with.

What does the future hold for the people of Haiti?
We have committed to a three year response and rehabilitation plan in Haiti.

Given the scale of the disaster, it’s going to take time. But we are optimistic, so long as the needs of the 80% of Haiti’s population who live on less than $2 a day are placed at the centre of the reconstruction effort.
