Location
Rekhapally district is a thickly-forested part of Andhra Pradesh. The area has a large population of tribal people, whose ancient customs are tied closely to the local landscape.

Life in Rekhapally
The traditional way of life of the Kondareddi and Koya is based on harvesting resources from the forest and growing crops in the fertile soils next to rivers. But the arrival of large scale paper production and other industries in Rekhapally’s forests has led to difficulties for many tribal communities. Tribal lands have been bought up and become controlled by outsiders, and water sources are being polluted. With little or no support from outside, traditional tribal communities are struggling to adapt and survive.

ActionAid's work in Rekhapally: Education
Education is the vital step towards escaping poverty forever. But some communities have no schools – and where they do exist, there are few teachers and the lessons are not relevant to theneeds and experience of tribal children – so many pupils quickly
drop out.

We’re working with adults and children to help them understand the importance of education and are helping to improve schools and the quality of teaching in the area.
