Adult learning

Reflect creates a democratic space where people can analyse issues for themselves, enabling them to articulate their views. Groups develop their own learning materials by constructing maps, calendars, matrices, and diagrams or using drama, story-telling and songs to capture social, economic, cultural and political issues from their own environment.

"I used to be as reluctant as anyone to come out and talk to people, but as we started the dialogue and the actions and I went to these different government offices, my fear and shyness were removed and I started to raise my voice. Now we know we have rights and that government officials should be our servants. We have the information about who is supposed to do what, when and where and how." Jangyabata Suna, Bubel village

Other adult education work
Although the Reflect approach is used most widely for adult education, other adult education projects include: starting women's home schools in Pakist

  • functional literacy classes
  • workers' or labourers' schools
  • programmes supporting cultural identity and spirituality groups, such as Mayan identity in Guatemala
  • education programmes for disabled adults
  • workshops for parents of children with disabilities
  • socio-legal education, enabling people to analyse social and governance issues that block the advancement of children's education
  • exposure and motivation through study trips for women and children to nearby towns and new places
  • savings and credit groups with links to children's education
