Our approach to emergencies and conflict

We have a long-term approach which recognises that emergencies and conflicts are intrinsically linked to the process of development in poor countries. That is why our approach to human security during emergencies and conflict involves increasing preparation for these events and attempts to ease the conditions for those facing them as well as response and recovery.

We are involved in preparation for potential crises before they erupt to reduce risks and mitigate impact, and also importantly after they occur, to aid recovery and explore the opportunities for positive change.

Our approach to emergency work is determined by the people themselves, from preparation to relief and recovery. We make a long-term commitment to work with communities, encouraging local people to be at the heart of the decision-making processes that affect them and their communities. Often the poorest and most marginalised are women and girls, we work to identify their needs and involve them in the entire process of promoting long-term, sustainable solutions.

Our approach is one in which we:

  • support poor and excluded people to access appropriate relief, and longer term recovery
  • advocate for women's and girls' rights during conflicts and disasters and support peace-building activities through women's groups and community based organisations
  • work with governments and intergovernmental organisations to reduce risks and protect people, especially the most vulnerable
  • support poor and excluded people in demanding international treaties which address human rights during conflicts and emergencies
  • produce knowledge and compile evidence of the experiences of women and poor people during conflict, climate change and environmental damage.
