water

Large areas of Somaliland are prone to drought and few people have access to clean water. Drought leads to animals dying of hunger, as grazing is exhausted and water sources dry up. People grow weak and die of starvation when they can no longer use their animals fro food.
Through the Sanaag and Togdheer community-based organisations we are helping to increase the availability of water by:

  • constructing dams, hand-dug wells, boreholes and berkeds (reservoirs)
  • improving access to shallow underground wells
  • harvesting rainwater from roofs of houses and into village reservoirs
  • diverting flood to improve the quantity of animal fodder.
