food rights

Agriculture is the main source of income in rural areas, where 85% of the population live. Prolonged drought in the 1999/2000 season slowed production and caused famine in the north and east.

We work with poor rural communities to help them achieve their basic right to an adequate supply of food. We train subsistence farmers in agricultural techniques and distribute seeds, cuttings and crops to farmers to help them set up small businesses and in times of drought.

ActionAid Uganda is part of ActionAid's international food rights campaign. Together with three other organisations, ActionAid Uganda promoted and supported the establishment of the Food Rights Alliance, a coalition of organisations working on food security related issues in Uganda. The aim was to build a collective voice to effectively advocate for the right to food. We also work to protect poor farmers' rights to seed to guarantee their food security in the long run.
