The idea behind my illustration is quite simply "what environment would you rather live in?" To show this I juxtaposed a rich healthy environment with a grey, polluted one. Most people would choose the rich and colorful environment; but not everyone has a choice. I just wanted make people think about the extremes of affluence and poverty in the world and how we should help those less privileged than ourselves.

The inspiration for my banner came from the 'Hunger Inquest' film that was on the Actionaid website. A part that really stood out to me was about seed. How it is seed that can fight hunger. I also wanted to show the idea that to end hunger we must support the hungry, help them to help themselves, this is what the hands are meant to represent, support and working together. I wanted to show how with support and with seed people will be able to farm for themselves and others and progress to sustainability. It is done in gouache paint and colouring pencils.

My name is Harriet Macdonald and I am a filmmaker and graphic designer originally from Australia.  I created this image with drawings, a stencil and a light to create the effect.  I wanted to create an island of light around the children to highlight their plight but also the thought that it can be changed. The right to eat is something that no one should be deprived of.

I decided to illustrate the two banners as playful scenes / environments based on each theme. The disasters/emergencies banner is based around the panic caused by an exploding volcano or a violent storm, and the hunger banner illustrates a farming community and a life cycle.

My image explores the idea of wastage and it's effect on the environment as well as humans. While we like to imagine a perfect world, in the distance tons of food are rotting on the tip. There's an imbalance  between consumption and wastage which needs to be addressed; if we wanted, we would have enough food to feed everyone.
