Tax dodging

More

We all moan about paying income tax or VAT, but without it we wouldn't have an NHS, free education, social care for vulnerable people, motorways, rubbish collections and all kinds of other things we often take for granted.

Companies also pay tax, but big multinationals often use tax havens to shift profits around the world and avoid paying the tax they owe. It's a problem here in the UK and all around the world.

Poor countries lose more money to tax dodging than they receive in aid. It's incredible but true.  If companies paid all the tax they should, it would be enough to:

Stop AIDS in its tracks
AND give a basic education to the 67 million children that currently miss out
AND end hunger. Twice.

ActionAid is campaigning for tax justice. We're calling on companies to stop dodging their taxes in poor countries, as well as putting pressure on world leaders to close the legal loopholes that make tax dodging possible.

Factfile:

  • Poor countries lose three times more money to tax havens than they receive in aid each year.
  • The money that is lost to tax dodging each year could provide a basic education for every one of the 69 million children currently missing out.
