SABMiller are dodging their taxes in developing countries. But if you've emailed them asking them to stop it recently, you might have got a reply from them - and one that is a definite change in tack from the letters they've sent out previously on this issue.
Their new letter talks about their recent report into their operations in Ghana (one of the main countries our Calling Time report focused on). Their report looks at how they bring jobs and investment to Ghana (which is great) but totally ignores the question of why the SABMiller brewery in Accra, Ghana has not paid any corporation tax over the last few years - meaning that market traders like Marta have been paying more than them
They are also silent about all of the huge payments that go out of Ghana, into tax havens each year. There’s no excuse for a company that makes global profits of more than £2 billion a year to avoid their taxes in poor countries. Someone like Ophelia, who wants to become a teacher in Ghana, simply won’t have a job unless the government raises enough money to pay her salary.
