ActionAid welcomes confirmation from European Commissioners Hedegaard and Oettinger about plans to limit the amount of food to fuel biofuels in the EU, calling on them to go further and abolish crop based biofuels entirely.
Clare Coffey, Policy Adviser at ActionAid says: “Finally the European Commissioners have come to their senses. They are firmly acknowledging that using precious food and agricultural land to fuel our cars is bad for people and bad for the environment.”
By proposing to put a brake on ‘food to fuel’, the Commissioners have signaled a major change of policy that could benefit the world’s poorest people.
“In a world where a billion go to bed hungry every night, it is immoral to turn precious food into fuel for our cars. The Commissioners must stand firm in the face of industry pressure and abolish crop based biofuels entirely”, Coffey concluded.
