Factual television coverage of the developing world is at the lowest level ever recorded according to new research published today. These are the findings of a new report ‘The World on the Box’, commissioned by 3WE, a coalition which includes ActionAid and other leading development and environment charities.
"It is alarming that factual programme-makers are choosing not to tell the stories of the poorest people in the world, these stories need to be seen. The strength of support ActionAid receives for its work in developing countries is evidence that issues of politics, development, environment and human rights are important to the public." said Alice Wynne Willson, head of media at ActionAid.
The report shows that whilst factual coverage of developing countries has dwindled dramatically, recent world events such as the Iraq war have led to some of the highest ever figures for developing country news.
