Three million girls in Africa are at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) each year.
FGM is life-threatening. It can cause trauma, chronic infections and lead to dangerous complications in childbirth. After undergoing FGM, many girls are forced to leave school and marry, denying them control of their own future.
But local women have the answer. Rooted in their communities, they are best placed to end FGM for good. Many have survived FGM themselves, and they work tirelessly to protect girls from undergoing the same ordeal.
Women’s groups run safe centres for girls at risk of FGM, work with the authorities to report cases and campaign nationally to bring an end to the practice. Through training sessions with parents, teachers and village elders about the dangers of FGM, they are changing behaviours within communities in the long term.
ActionAid works directly with women’s groups who are fighting FGM across ten countries in Africa, providing funding, training and support. In 2015 alone we mobilised 278,800 women to challenge violence against women and girls and harmful traditional practices.
What ActionAid does
Around the world, women and children are affected the most by poverty. From the moment they are born, girls especially face inequalities and injustice in almost every aspect of their lives.
ActionAid puts women and girls at the centre of our work across 45 countries. We make sure girls go to and stay in school, we work with communities to end gender-based violence, and we train women in the skills they need to earn a living.
We also help women and communities prepare for and recover from disasters, at a time when they can be at their most vulnerable. We demand action at local, national and international level. We don’t walk away until we’ve achieved lasting change.
How we use the money you give us

These figures are taken from our expenditure in 2015.
