Rwanda First Hand Experience 2018

Volunteer with us to help build a much-needed classroom block at Group Scolaire school, in the village of Shingiro in northern Rwanda. This promises to be a life changing experience for you and for the local community.

What will I be doing?

You’ll be working alongside local people to build the classroom. You don’t need any building experience to take part — just enthusiasm, motivation and the desire to muck in and help!

Building

You could be digging foundations, clearing land or mixing concrete. Don’t worry, you don’t need any building experience to take part.

Rwandan food is fresh and simple, and includes sweet potatoes, corn and fruit. We can cater for all dietary requirements.

Whether you sign up on your own or with a friend, you’ll meet lots of amazing people from the community and great volunteers of all ages!

During the week you will have the opportunity to visit another nearby project, to gain a broader insight into our work in Rwanda.

Accommodation

The group will be staying in a locally owned 3* hotel in the city of Ruhengeri. You will share a twin room with an ensuite and air conditioning.

There will be the opportunity to experience traditional Rwandan culture at the welcome ceremony, on the project visit and sight-seeing tour of Kigali.

What’s the itinerary?

Fri 19 October/ 26 October

Meet your team at London Heathrow airport and take an overnight flight to Kigali.

Sat 20 October/ 27 October

Arrive in Kigali and travel to your hotel. There’s time to relax before enjoying a welcome dinner. 

Sun 21 October/ 28 October

Go on a morning sightseeing tour of Kigali, to explore its many sights before travelling to Ruhengeri, our base for the week. There will be a project briefing in the evening. 

Mon 22 - Thu 25 October/ Mon 29 October — Thur 1 November

Each morning you will travel to the local school to help build the classroom block. During the week we will visit another ActionAid project and enjoy some cultural activities. Each evening we’ll eat dinner at different  restaurants in the area. 

Fri 26 October/ 2 November

The final day of the build and an emotional farewell ceremony. We celebrate our achievements with a last meal with new friends.

Sat 27 October/ 3 November

Transfer to the airport on Saturday for the return flight back to London, arriving Sunday morning.

You will travel across the border into Uganda to spot gorillas in Bwindi National Park.

 

When you are not trekking into the jungle in search of apes, you will have time to explore the local area, before returning to Rwanda to fly home.
