ActionAid volunteers take part in a First Hand Experience

 

Nepal First Hand Experience 2017

Volunteer with us to help build a much-needed classroom block at Bani Bilas school, in the village of Chapaguan in the Kathmandu Valley, where an entire school building was destroyed by the 2015 earthquakes. This promises to be a life-changing experience for you and for the local community.

What will I be doing?

You’ll be working alongside local people to build the classroom. You don’t need any building experience to take part - just enthusiasm, motivation and the desire to muck in and help!

Building on site

Building

You could be digging foundations, clearing land or mixing concrete. Don't worry, you don't need any building experience to take part. 

Nepalese cuisine

Food

Nepalese food has influences from India and Tibet, and includes lentils, curries and rice dishes. We can cater for all dietary requirements.

Whether you sign up on your own or with a friend, you'll meet lots of amazing people from the community and great volunteers of all ages!

During the week you will have the opportunity to visit another nearby project, to gain a broader insight into our work in Nepal.

Accommodation

The group will be staying in a locally owned 3* hotel in the city of Patan. You will share a twin room with an ensuite and air conditioning.

Local culture

There will be the opportunity to experience traditional Nepalese culture at the welcome ceremony, on the project visit and sightseeing tour of Kathmandu.

What’s the itinerary?

Fri 27 October

Meet your team at London Heathrow airport and take an overnight flight to Kathmandu.

Sat 28 October

Arrive in Kathmandu and travel to your hotel in Patan in the Kathmandu Valley. 

Sun 29 October

Go on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, to explore its many sights. There will be a team dinner and project briefing in the evening. 

Mon 30 October - Thu 2 November

Each morning you will travel to the local school to help build the classroom block. During the week we will visit another ActionAid project and enjoy some cultural activities. Each evening we'll eat dinner at different restaurants in the area.

Fri 3 November 

The final day of the build and an emotional farewell ceremony. We celebrate our achievements with a last meal with new friends.

Sat 4 November 

Transfer to the airport for the return flight, arriving in London on Sunday morning.

Sat 4 - Mon 6 November 

You will stay in Kathmandu for an additional 3 nights, where you will spend your days exploring this facinating city, either independently or with a guide. Among the many options on offer are a sight seeing flight over Mount Everest, watching the sunrise over the Himalayas from nearby Nagarkot, or taking the time to explore Patan with its many stunning temples.

When you are not exploring the temples, you will have time to enjoy the relaxed Nepalese pace of life and soak up the magic of the country.
